Living on the roof of a derelict industrial site, the old abattoir, Pforzheim

The aim of the Gewerbekultur co-operative is to develop the derelict site of the Old Slaughterhouse in Pforzheim in a socially responsible, environmentally friendly and collaborative manner. The site, which will feature a mix of commercial premises, studio spaces, social facilities and inclusive housing models, is to be developed into a vibrant, eco-friendly and community-oriented place.

To this end, a concept for phased implementation has been developed. The second step in this process is the preparation of a feasibility study to examine the conversion and extension of the existing building for residential purposes and to trial alternative residential uses on a pilot basis.
The feasibility study that has been carried out examines the structural, technical and planning law requirements for the conversion and further development of the former abattoir building in Pforzheim. The aim is to highlight the potential of the existing building with a view to a future-oriented, mixed-use neighbourhood development and to examine possibilities for additional residential accommodation – both within the existing building and „on the roof“. The building is situated in an urban transition zone of significant importance, lying between commercial use, public infrastructure and adjacent residential areas. Building on the principles developed, a
A utilisation concept has been developed that highlights the potential of the existing stock.

The concept developed takes the approach of adapting the existing building stock for contemporary use through targeted demolition, refurbishment and the addition of new structures. The aim is to preserve the existing building structure and complement it with new, community-oriented forms of living and working.
