Augustenburg Castle, Karlsruhe-Grötzingen

Single-stage realisation competition for the extension and conversion of the listed parts of the Renaissance Augustenburg Palace into a senior citizens' centre with 100 fully inpatient beds, 30 serviced flats and a day care facility.

The design is characterised by the listed Augustenburg Castle, the topography of the site and the extensive spatial programme to be realised. In order to do justice to the location and the existing building fabric, Augustenburg Castle was supplemented with buildings of similar geometry and building mass. With their slender pitched roofs, these buildings blend in with the surrounding buildings. The basic shape of the historic complex with its U-shape has been retained. The gaps between the buildings were completed or closed with connecting components with flat roofs.
