Building group Friedenskirchler in Wiley, Neu-Ulm

The "Curd" building group developed from an initiative of the Neu-Ulm Peace Church, which places a special focus on the topics of "living together" and "sustainability". Both aspects have become particularly topical due to the restrictions and personal impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on housing.

The building group applied to the city of Neu-Ulm for a plot of land in the Wiley-Nord development area and was awarded the contract on the basis of its social and ecological objectives.

The project comprises approx. 3,000 m² of living space plus approx. 10% of communal space and is to be built in timber construction. In terms of planning, particular emphasis is placed on socio-spatial differentiation in order to facilitate encounters, whether incidental or deliberately intended.

The communal areas, such as the common room, terrace, utility rooms, conservatory, co-working spaces, guest flat and areas for urban gardening, are located on the top floor. This not only emphasises the value of these communal areas, but also allows the areas to be flexible and adaptable to changing needs.

Due to the separation of load-bearing and space-creating structures, a high degree of individualisation of the floor plans and sizes of the flats is possible, which is made possible by the need for prefabrication and the associated cost-effective construction.
