Extension Regenbogenschule, Giessen

The primary school in Giessen needs more space and quality time for pupils and teachers. The need for high-quality all-day care is also growing, which is why we are currently planning to extend the existing school building to include a sports hall with gymnastics room, a canteen and rooms for all-day care. We were able to convince the client, the district of Giessen, of our concept as part of a competition in the VgV procedure.

Our aim is to create a pleasant environment for the children, to provide adequate space for children's learning and development and at the same time to build in a sustainable way. The use of sustainable materials and the creation of a healthy indoor climate are the basis for contemporary architecture, which is why the buildings are to be constructed predominantly from wood and clay.

The preliminary design envisages a strong interior-exterior relationship with deliberate visual axes into the surroundings, bright rooms with large windows and a high proportion of natural light. The visual and tactile quality of the natural building materials such as wood and clay creates a warm, natural and calm atmosphere. We respond to the different utilisation requirements of the newly created spaces with well thought-out equipment and child-friendly room solutions: We are developing sheltered retreats, play and learning areas and plenty of space for encounters and creativity for the young users, both indoors and outdoors.

We are realising this project in collaboration with PA+ as general planner.
