The existing property is a semi-detached house on the outskirts of Stuttgart. One half has already been renovated and has been extended to the south. It is now the turn of the other half to redefine itself. Unfortunately, the existing structure and the building fabric from 1936 are not worth preserving and do not allow the client's requirements and wishes to be realised through a conversion. The cellar is also damp.
A complete demolition is unavoidable, as this is the only way to create a modern, energy-efficient building that fulfils the spirit of the times and the needs of the client.
The new building should not only respond appropriately to the client's requirements, but also to its surroundings. A rendered façade is to be realised and the roof shape and pitch adopted. In addition, the alignment of the other buildings in the neighbourhood will be taken up so that the new building blends in well with its surroundings.
The property is accessed from the north and has a north-south orientation, with the common wall to the east. A beautiful garden extends to the south of the property, to which the rooms of the new building are orientated and open up, strengthening the connection from inside to outside.
The design of the interior spaces is also characterised by the contrasts of visual connections and unity. The two-storey building plus top floor is clearly divided into public, semi-public and private areas. A classic division of uses "living downstairs, sleeping upstairs" forms the basis of the floor plan design. The "social areas" such as cooking, eating and living are located on the ground floor, the bedrooms are on the first floor and there is a private studio under the roof.
